although honestly ronald reagan was a murderer and a terrorist. i still sometimes get so angry i cry over the fact that the AIDS epidemic was a fucking joke to him. as far as i’m concerned, ronald reagan robbed me of an entire generation of my family and he robbed the entire LGBTQ+ community of a family and a legacy and of our history and of a link to our older generations. you want to know why there’s such a disconnect between old and young people in the community? it’s because the bridge between us is all fucking dead. and they died young. our community is stunted and only just now learning how to evolve again because some of our greatest voices and minds and artists and mentors were fucking murdered before they could even see 30. our terminology is old and clunky and uncomfortable because we’re a bunch of kids picking up what got left behind by ghosts in the 80s–20, 30 years of space between the old community and the new, because it took time before there was a generation large enough that AIDS hadn’t ravaged its population down to nearly nothing. we can’t fucking agree what to call ourselves because the boom of our activist movement was slaughtered through neglect. our community was destroyed 30 years ago and only as of recently are there enough of us, only now is there a generation of young adults who mostly don’t know anyone who has died of AIDS, for whom it’s not a death sentence and for whom it’s not a threat and for whom the wounds aren’t fresh and real. we are building up over scar tissue and there’s a reason we are so fractured.
and i blame ronald and nancy reagan for laughing at us while we scrambled around trying to figure out how to stop our friends and family from dying by the hundreds and thousands. i blame them for taking away the family i never got to meet. we are a community with no blood ties that has to build itself and maintain itself and create families away from blood and i know that it’s different but all i can think of is of the children of holocaust survivors who grew up with no family at all because everyone, everyone died. and at least those survivors had the small comfort of nuremburg and of nazi trials and of “never again”, my jewish family is comforted by knowing that even though neo-nazis exist they’re still considered, by and large, evil, but what do i have? the hitler of this community of mine is still called a hero. reagan watched us die and he laughed, and people still worship him even with our blood all over his hands.
